Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I really make unlimited calls with this plan without incurring further charges?
A. Voice Over the Internet Protocol, VOIP, telephone calls are essentially free from one Internet based telephone to another Internet based telephone such as one connected to a T1 or DSL phone line.

Telephone calls from a Internet based phone, such as a CISCO 7960 or from a analog to digital converter such as a SIPURA 2000, to a POTS line, Plain Old Telephone Service, are billable where the usual long distance charges apply including intrastate, interstate and within your telephone area code.

Q. Do I keep my exisiting telephone number?
A. Yes, we recommend that you keep your local telephone service for now. The local telephone service can be providing your DSL service. Keeping your local telephone number is a way to keep your phone number in the telephone directory. If you prefer to cancel your local telephone number, we can work with you to make sure that your telephone number is recorded in the telephone directory. In any event, we will provide you with a local telephone number as well. Our local telephone number is called a DID number. The DID number is a block of telephone numbers that Freese-Notis Global Internet has purchased from the Telephone provider. You will use this number when you choose to use your VOIP service. This would be the case when you want to make a internet to internet call, or take advantage of our long distance telephone rates.

Q. Do I cancel my current long-distance carrier?
A. Yes, you can change your long-distance carrier to Freese-Notis Global Internet, FNGI. When you make a long distance call, using the DID number that FNGI has assigned to you, our computers/servers will automatically determine whether the call is an internet to internet call or a long distance call. If the telephone call is internet to internet, there is essentially no toll charge for the call. If the telephone call is internet to a POTS call and determined to be a long distance call, then the toll charges will apply. Long distance interstate calls will be billed at 4.9 cents per minute. Intrastate calls can vary depending upon where you call, in some cases 10 cents per minute or more depending on local tariff charges.

Q. Do I require a different telephone?
A. No, any domestic phone will do. However, the telephone will have to be attached to a analog to digital modem in order to make the VOIP call. We recommend a SIPURA 2000 or 3000 model as your analog to digital modem.

Q. Do I require any phone blocks?
A. Phone blocks are a way to filter calls. We recommend that you have the 900/976 block, an incoming Collect Block and a Third Party Billing Block. These are provided by default by FNGI. Other blocks may be available. Call for additional details.

Q. Do I require a special telephone or any other equipment ?
A. Most any phone equipment will work, but to make calls over the Internet you will need a modem such as a Sipura 2000 to plug your phone into, and connect your modem to an ethernet cable via a Hub or DSL modem. For telephones, we recommend CISCO SIP based telephones. Other phone manufacturers may work as well. However at this time, we only offer support for CISCO based SIP phones or SIPURA devices. Call for the latest supported products.

Q. Are there any restrictions with regard to the calls made?
A. Yes, 1-900 numbers cannot be accessed. International calls will need to be set up prior to using such service. International rates vary from country to country and these rates will need to be determined and set up in our billing system.

Q. What happens if I am billed for additional charges somehow put on the line?
A. You would be responsible for these charges? It is important to protect your phone number.

Q. How does the system affect a DSL or ISDN line already installed?
A. The system should not influence a DSL or ISDN at all. Because the internet traffic is on a different frequency, it is not perceived by the phone as being a phone call.
